What would you expect as a man, from the woman you fell in love with? Would you expect her to love you unconditionally forever? Would you expect her to be satisfied with the life she has with you forever, no matter how hard it may get? How far would one’s boundaries go to make their wife happy?In the short story “The Necklace,” written by a very good author, who goes by the name Guy de Maupassant, there is a couple named Mathilde and Monsieur Loisel.
The fate in “The Necklace,” falls on Mathlide, who is living by someone else’s standards, not money, which is the root of all her evils inside her dissatisfied life. Mathilde Loisel, a beautiful, charming woman who feels she was born into a family with low economic class. She married a lowly clerk, Monsieur who cares for her deeply. Mathlide desiresmaterialistic things in this life that she just can’t possess. She wants a fancy dinner, nice jewelry, and fancy clothes, that’s what she lives for. Her husband can’t afford it and if she doesn’t acquire this things, she doesn’t feel enviable. She regrets a lot in her life and spends endless hours dreaming of a more prominent existence.
One night, her husband Monsieur came home, and there was this invitation in the mail. They have received an invitation to go to a ball. Sounds good right? Wrong, they invitation states that there is requirement for a “proper” dress. She wouldn’t take the advice given by her husband who just told her to just wear flowers. Every woman wants to feel like she’s the best looking at any event and if she feels like she’s not good enough, she will continue to find and look for accessories that will enhance her features.
