The legalization of medical marijuana is a controversial

legalization of medical marijuana is a controversial topic that has widely
divided the United States since 1911. One side argues that the medicinal
benefits of marijuana outweigh its risk. Meanwhile, others firmly believe that
the hidden dangers of the drug are not worth it. Organizations like Americans
for Safe Access: Medical Cannabis were implemented to advocate for medical
marijuana. This organization’s primary goal is to obtain legal and safe access
to marijuana for future medical use (“About Americans for Safe Access” n.p).
Contrary to this is the Smart Approaches to Marijuana, an organization whose
stance is against the application of marijuana in the healthcare field. This
organizations objective is to use scientific evidence to educate the people on
the negative consequences of marijuana with hopes of shifting attitudes and
reducing the employment of marijuana in clinics (“Mission and Vision” n.p).  These two different organizations aim to
uncover an effective and safe improvement in the treatment of children and
adult symptoms for various health conditions. To address the concerns of both
organizations a compromise can be installed that introduces the holy basil herb
into the medical field as an alternative to marijuana.

for Safe Access: Medical Cannabis is an organization that was founded by a
medical marijuana patient and supported by thousands of citizens and medical
professionals whose strive is to promote marijuana as a legal medication. The
campaign is to construct a future for marijuana in the medical field as they
assure the public of its safety and quality. The organizations federal and
state efforts have commended significance in public affairs. “ASA occupies a
seat at the table for medical cannabis patients in policy matters; ASA has
passed local, state, and federal laws; ASA has fought and won in state and
federal courts” (“About Americans for Safe Access” n.p). ASA voices the
medical value of marijuana and its enhanced treatment safety. Patricia D. Smith
and Andrew P. Lannon in their recent article stress the remarkable impacts of
medical marijuana in the health care system that goes hand in hand with ASA
claims. The article states, “Medical Marijuana has numerous recognized health
benefits: 1) treatment and prevention of glaucoma; 2) reversal of carcinogenic
effects of tobacco; 3) improvement in lung health . . . Medical marijuana is a
significantly safer alternative to opioids, which have a high risk of death due
to overdose” (Smith and Lannon 59). Americans for Safe Access organization work
to educate the public with research and patient resources to alter their
attitudes on the medicinal properties of marijuana. They won’t put their
efforts to rest until the law grants citizens the right to utilize cannabis as
a treatment alternative

Approaches to Marijuana organization is organized by professional individuals
that dedicate their life to research the implications of marijuana in the
medical field. “SAM works to bridge the gap between the public’s understanding
of marijuana and science’s understanding of marijuana” (“Mission and Vision”
n.p). The organization claims that science continuously proves that marijuana
is harmful to the human body and it should not be proposed as a legal option in
the public health system until our society fully comprehend its consequences.
SAM biggest concern is that medical marijuana will only lead to increased
addiction and eventually will be abused for recreational use. In a research
article published in 2010, the authors Steven L. Jaffe and Matthew Klein
confirm that “California adolescent patients have been influenced by the advent
of medical marijuana to view marijuana as being more beneficial and available .
. . Adolescents are receiving medical marijuana cards without parental
permission” (Jaffe and Klein 460). The research supports the organizations
ultimate fear of the legalization of marijuana. The end goal of Smart
Approaches to Marijuana is to put a termination on the normalization of
marijuana to stimulate healthy and cautious choices in the future.

for Safe Access: Medical Cannabis and Smart Approaches to Marijuana share a
similar ultimate objective, but have yet to reach a resolution that battles
their differences. Both organizations are concerned with implementing an
effective therapy that enhances the quality of treatment to several health
conditions and avoids any safety risk. However, the constant deviations and
disagreements have caused them to steer far from a consensus. ASA strongly
believes that Medical marijuana is the answer. Through extensive research, they
have proven that medical marijuana has in fact shown effective. The
organization believes that medical marijuana is one of the safest pain
relievers. The medicine is free of pesticides and any form of contamination.
Meanwhile, SAM is not entirely against the idea of medical marijuana but
understands that it can imply danger to the consumers physically and mentally.
The organization uses scientific research as well, to express to the public the
risks that will come along with the legalization of medical marijuana. They
believe every person has the right to be thoroughly informed of the negative
consequences of medical marijuana. SAM argues that it sets the stage for future
addiction.  To solve this challenge, a
compromise can be composed to favor both organizations: the proposal of holy
basil for medical treatment as an alternative to marijuana. For centuries, holy
basil has been utilized for its medicinal properties. According to Sitakanta
Pattnaik and Pradeep K. Chand, “(holy basil) of the family Lamiaceae are
valuable for their pharmaceutical properties . . . The juice of the leaves of
both plants is used for the treatment of catarrh cold, bronchitis and
parasitical skin infections” (Pattnaik and Chand 846). The herbs properties are
very similar to those of marijuana except it does not contain any of the
dangerous side effects like dependency.
This resolution will appease ASA and SAM as it proposes an improvement
in natural treatment for clinical conditions that reduce health risk. The holy
basil can be grown in your household and consumed as a tea which will be no
profit or purchased as a supplement in a drugstore.

and large, organizations like Americans for Safe Access: Medical Cannabis and
Smart Approaches to Marijuana are separated by the political and social dispute
of legalization of marijuana in the medical field. Although both organizations
share a common interest in enhancing the quality of treatment in the
healthcare, they have never agreed upon a form of action to reach their goal.
That being the case, a concrete solution for ASA and SAM would be an
introduction of the holy basil into modern medicine as an alternative to
marijuana. This compromise will prove successful with both organizations as it
makes way for an effective therapy for medical concerns and eradicates any form
of secondary effects to the patient. Ultimately, both organizations can unite
and form an alliance to further research and advocate for other natural
advancements in medicine.
