“The Alchemist,” by Paulo Coelho, has a very good plot. Coelho is telling the readers that they can either discover their personal dreams or ruin it. “A personal legend is God’s blessing; it is the path that God chose for you here on Earth” (Coelho vi). My personal legend is to become a Forensic Scientist Examiner.
During my journey, I’ve faced obstacles such as childhood defeat, love, fear of the defeats, and fear of realizing the dream. I overcame these obstacles by thinking of the outcome and how proud I’d be in the end. At the beginning of my journey, the first obstacle I encountered was the childhood defeat. “We are told from childhood onward that everything we want to do is impossible” (vi). Growing up in a house with four older siblings was tough when everyone was trying to be better than the other.
I was always told that I would never amount to the success of any of my other siblings. That’s when I knew I had to take action and push myself to strive. “There is only one way to learn. Its through action” (125).
“We know what we want to do, but are afraid of hurting those around us by abandoning everything to pursue our dream” (vi) which is the obstacle to love. On my road to success, I had to leave my family and go off to training for the Army which was six months long. I knew was going to break my mother’s heart.
The thought of leaving them was depressing for me as well, and I regretted enlisting into the military so many times. “When we love, we always strive to become better than we are. When we strive to become better than we are, everything around us becomes better too.
” (151). However, I wanted to make my family proud, and I knew taking this step in life was going to open many doors for me in the future. “Once we have accepted that love is a stimulus, we come up against the third obstacle which is fear of the defeats we will meet on the path” (vi).
