Sustainably with regard to the environment/earth’s resources means to balance humanity’s growth both economically and personally with the natural resources found on earth. The definition of sustainably, given in the dictionary states; Sustainability is the ability to continue a defined behavior indefinitely. This with regard to environmental sustainability means that our environment can continue to thrive indefinitely. At the rate of energy consumption today, this is an unrealistic expectation.A delicate balance means to balance humanity’s need for energy and the protection of the environment and its resources. By creating a balance between the two, the juxtaposition of which humanity lives in will be nonexistent. The need to have poverty and upper-class living with such extreme ends of energy consumption, creates a divide in humans and environmental resources. The balance needs to kept in order to provide for humanity’s needs, however humanity must change its thinking and exceptions on energy. We can no longer consume with the magnitude of our ancestors. Herman Daly, who was one of the early pioneers of ecological sustainability, looked at today’s problems with a natural capital viewpoint (Natural capital is the world’s stock of natural resources) He stated three problems that would need to be solved to maintain the sustainability of the environment. For the renewable source of energy the rate of harvest should not exceed the rate of regeneration; For pollution, the rates of waste generation from projects should not exceed the capacity of the environment; For nonrenewable resources, the depletion of the nonrenewable resources should require a comparable development of renewable substitutes for that resource. Renewable sources, such as wind, solar, or geothermal, can be naturally replenished after a set amount of time. Relating back to what Herman Daly stated these resources cannot be harvested faster than they can be replenished. For example, solar energy can be indefinitely replaced, assuming we continue to have the sun. The main advantages of solar energy is that it is clean, able to operate independently or in conjunction with traditional energy sources, and is remarkably renewable. Solar energy also solves another step in environmental sustainability. Pollution. Another option for solving energy sustainability with renewable energy sources is geothermal energy. Geothermal energy is derived from below the earth. A geothermal heat pump system consists of the pump, an air delivery system(ductwork), and a heat exchanger. This is achieved by a system of pipes buried in the shallow ground near where the energy is most needed In the winter, the heat pump removes heat from the heat exchanger and pumps it into the indoor air delivery system. In the summer, the process is reversed, and the heat pump moves heat from the indoor air into the heat exchanger. The heat removed from the indoor air during the summer can also be used to provide a free source of hot water. By creating this system geothermal energy is a more easily applicable in places without access to solar energy. Environmental sustainability in balance with providing the energy we need is the ideal plan. America consumes 24% of the world energy and accounts for only 5% of the world’s population. As the world’s population increases, the amount of energy needed to run increases. We have not figured out a way to run completely on renewable sources, (solar, wind, ex) but we have implemented various forms of renewable energy into our lives. Currently, wood energy is the most important single source of renewable energy providing about 6% of the global total primary energy supply. Wood energy still needs to be combated by the production of more trees. By this example, we know that environmental sustainability is an achievable goal but we as a whole need to be the spark to preserve our environment. As Herman Daly said, “There is something fundamentally wrong in treating the Earth as if it were a business in liquidation.” By preserving our environment, reducing pollution, and using renewable sources of energy we can sustain our growing population and create a delicate balance and the sustainability of our environment.
