Roman general and statesman, Julius Caesar, turned the Roman Republicinto the powerful Roman empire that is still remembered today. JuliusCaesar was born in Rome on July 12,100 BC. Caesar was part of the famousJulian family, which was one of the first families in Rome. Growing up to bea great general, he conquered Gaul and also Britain. He then became thefirst Caesar of Rome and ruled for flve years as dictator. Julius Caesar wasconsidered one of the finest Romans ever by many people, but despite this,he could not be considered a truly great man.

Julius Caesar undoubtedly changed history, and he had many excellentqualities. He was an incredible general, statesman, and scholar. He wrote ahistory of his own wars, and they are still used to teach Latin today.

Caesarwas a rich noble, but many plebeians, the lower class, supported him. Hewas looked upon as the champion of the poor because he always supportedtheir causes, and they elected him to several high positions in thegovernment. He increased in influence and power and was elected governorof Spain, which Rome ruled at the time. Caesar governed Spain very well,and when he returned to Rome, he was elected consul. He skillfullygoverned in his time as consul and made many good laws. Some of the lawshe made canceled tax demands on farmers and also gave public land tofathers of three or more children.

After his term had ended, he was givencommand of an army. His first great conquest was to conquer the Gauls. Hewas a marvelous general, and his solders admired him greatly. He wouldencourage and support his men and shared in all of their hardships. Day afterday, he would march at the head of his troops through rain, heat, and snow,and would fight in the front ranks with them. He inspired his troops, and aftereight years he had conquered all of Gaul.
