Over the last couple hundredyears, humans have caused the amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere toskyrocket. There was an IPCC report from 2007 that confirmed with evidence thatthe significant increase in the atmosphere of greenhouses gases are because ofhumans. The most potent of these greenhouse gases include, carbon dioxide,nitrous oxide, and methane. Humans have been increasing the amount of carbondioxide being released into the atmosphere through the burning of fossil fuels,whether that be from driving vehicles, to heating and electricity, or evenindustry use. The reason that methane gas has been increasing is because of themassive landfills that we have created and the increase in nitrous oxide hasalso been a result of the burning of fossil fuels. Renewable energies are soimportant in discussions of climate science because they are the future.
Thenon-renewable resources that we use today, like coal and oil, will eventuallyrun out. Unlike those resources renewable energies will never run out and canbe replenished constantly. Renewable energy sources include solar energy andwind energy. Renewables are also important because they do not producegreenhouse gases, so they’re not polluting the environment and releasingdangerous toxins into the atmosphere. The cost of renewable resources have beengoing down and if they continue at this rate renewable energies will easily be themost sustainable solution for humans, both environmentally and economically. Climatechange mitigation is one of the main reasons why there has been an increasingdemand to renewable energy technologies. Climate change mitigation refers totrying to reduce the emission of greenhouse gases through the use of newtechnologies, renewable energies, and other practices.
Renewable energies areespecially important when it comes to mitigations because through the use ofmore renewable resources, humans would reduce the amount of greenhouse gaseswe’re pumping into the atmosphere, while also reducing the costs of mitigation.IPCC reports have already found that renewable energy technologies have indeedmade strides in cutting cost along with increasing performance and that theadvantages of such technologies outweigh the disadvantages. The factors contributing to the rise in sea levelis that the ocean has a giant heat storage capacity and if global temperaturerises, the ocean absorbs a bunch of heat and expands. The greater the volume ofocean water affected by thermal expansion, the more the seal level will rise.The other factor is that the rise in temperature causes ice to melt which alsoincreases the sea level. The melting of the Artic is less important for directsea level rise than thermal expansion because most of the increase in seallevel is a result of global warming, which in turn causes thermal expansion ofthe ocean. Thermal expansion happens when seawater expands because thetemperature of the water has increased.
There is a direct correlation betweenthe increase in temperature of the atmosphere and the increase in temperatureof our ocean waters and when the temperature of the ocean increases, so toodoes the total volume which is what causes the level of water in the ocean torise. The melting of the Artic is a good example of a positive feedbackmechanism. The ocean absorbs carbon dioxide from the atmosphere into the waterand as the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere increases, so too doesthe temperature of the air and as a result the temperature of the oceanincreases. The oceans ability of removing carbon dioxide from the atmospheredecreases as the temperature increases.
It is difficult to predict the exactamount of sea level rise and the timing of it because of the time lag betweenthe increase in carbon dioxide in the atmosphere along with the increase intemperature and its effect on the melting of the ice.Climate change risk assessmentlooks at the direct risk that comes from the climate response to emissions,along with the risk that come from humans’ effect and climate and then thefuture pathway of global emissions. Drought can really hit agriculture andeconomies around the world hard.
Not all droughts are the same, droughts varyin duration and intensity. Things like that make it difficult to assess theimpact and risk of drought. Estimating the future risk of how droughts will beare based on future climate change projections and projections of exposed landand people, which both have many uncertainties. A lot of these projectionsdepend on the combination of the rate of emissions along with changes inprecipitation. The future impact that a drought has not only on land and agriculture,but also on people, depends on a multitude of things. Some of these thingsinclude population change and economic growth. The administration should not beable to just remove scientific data from the government websites like they’redoing and something should be done to put a stop to it.
In my personal opinionit’s not good and to me it looks like the administration is trying to get ridof certain information for their own benefit. I don’t think what they’re doingis benefiting the American people, especially removing information on climate.We already know that there’s a big climate problem and by the administrationdeleting information like this, it feels like they’re kind of just brushingthis topic to the side, like they’re trying to make it seem as if the climatechange isn’t important. It also makes me think that this administration is notlooking for a solution to climate change, but instead it is just trying toshift focus away from it. People should have access to this data and bepermitted to see what was there prior to the Trump administration’s changes.
It’s important that people be able to see this information because climatechange is a real problem that is in need of a solution and through the use ofthis information maybe someone will be able to figure out what needs to bedone.
