Music Video CritiqueThe human body. Throughout music videos, womenare characterized as beautiful through three words: (1) sexy, (2) thin, and (3)attractive. Women are constantly pressured to maintain ‘the perfect body’ inorder to make themselves look presentable for society. In the music video”Swalla” by Jason Derulo, the video constantly shows women who are half naked, dancing provocatively, and are considered to have ‘the perfect body.’ In this particularmusic video, but also in many other music videos, women are usually portrayedas objects who are always dancing in the background or drooling over the malesinger. Why? When looking at it in a business perspective, the music industryknows that a music video will get the most likes when it incorporates women whohave a nice body and are attractive.
But when looking at society’s perspective, all you can see is the wrong interpretation of how women should look and howwomen should act. Some women may look at these types of music videos and feelashamed or even disgusted to look at themselves because they automaticallycompare themselves to the women in these music videos. After analyzing andcomparing themselves to other women, most times they don’t have the confidenceor self-esteem to reassure themselves that they don’t have to look a certainway in order to look or feel beautiful.
In the music video, the women are seenwearing lingerie and dancing provocatively; the two combinations that show offtheir ‘perfect bodies.’ Women watching these videos may think that if they actand dress the way these women are in music videos, this will attract theopposite gender, or even feel accepted in society. Speaking on behalf of a women’sperspective, no women should feel as if they have to act a certain way and evenlook a certain way in order to feel accepted by the opposite gender or bysociety. These types of videos are misleading and give the wrong impression toother women, making them believe that they need to have an hourglass body inorder to feel and look their best. These videos are one of the main causes towhy women develop bulimia nervosa, because they are afraid that they may be toofat, or may even starve themselves or induce vomiting after they purge eat inorder to not gain any weight. This can also result in anorexia nervosa which iswhen an individual restricts from eating or gaining the nutrition needed, inorder to not gain any weight or to become skinny.
Another eating disorder that theymay develop is binge eating disorder, where an individual believes he/she istoo skinny and needs to gain weight, in a short period of time, in order toachieve the body they want. Music videos are one of the main causes to whywomen feel insecure about themselves and feel as if they need to achieve that ‘perfectbody’ in order to be accepted in society. These types of music videos provide thewrong image on what it means to be beautiful.
These types of videos can leadwomen to do anything in their power to insure that they look like the women inmusic videos, instead of embracing their inner and outer beauty andunderstanding that they are beautiful and perfect just the way they look.
