Mary Shellys’ Frankenstien

In Frankenstien Mary Shelly uses a chinese box technique. The chapters that we read are told in two separate parts. One chapter is told by Victor Frankenstien (This shows us Victors point of view). The second half is told in the creatures view of events.

In the nineteenth century when Mary Shelly wrote the book, electricity was discovered in the human limbs and the first blood transfusion took place and it turned out successful. Another influence on the book would of been Mary Shellys own experiences like when her mother died during a childbirth or when Mary suffered multiple miscarriages herself. In the nineteenth century people were solely judged on there apperences. People got judged by there cover. Frankenstien tried to play god and when he created the creature we all knew punishment was just around the bend.

This is an emotive chapter we are given an insight of Victor’s emotions and his views on the creature. Victor starts out with excitment but that excitment soons turns into horror and disgust once the crature comes to life,This chapter is written in the first person point of view, it is written from Frankenstien’s point of view. The atmosphere is surprising in this chapter, you would expect a nice happy colourful mood with nice sunny wether and smiley faces but instead the atmosphere is miserable and the weather is gloomy. This atmosphere contrasts with the way Frankenstien feels towards the creature now that it had come to pleasent images. These are images we want to see. These are nice features about the creature.

Frankenstien from this point on starts feeling sorry for himself. “the beauty and dream vanished” this shows that he has judged the creature on what he looks like . He has judged the creature by its cover. He has took no responsibility for the creature and hasnt given it a chance. Frankenstien doesnt take any responsibility for the creature so Mary is very critical about Frankenstien for abondoning the creature for its ugliness.”Continued a long time traversing my bed chamber, unable to compose my mind to sleep”. Frankenstien feels sorry for himself at this point because he cant go to sleep and forget about the creature.

All the creature wants is to be accepted “He held up the curtain on the bed” this shows that hes approched the bed to see Frankenstien. “he fixed his eyes on me. his jaws opened and he muttered some inarticulate sounds”. this shows that he is trying to communicate like there is a bond there between a father and a son. One hand was stretched out” This shows that he wanted to be friends with someone like he wanted a hug. “Iescaped and run down the stairs”.

This shows were he abandons the creature. He left the creature to fend for himself from this point on in its life. If this was a baby that had just been born it would have been uder 24hours old. Thgis bit in the book is very emotional because victor the creature is going to kill him, but really it is like a father and son thing , its like a child reaching out for its father.”Inarticulate sounds” The creature cant speak he just mummbles sounds and tries to strins words together but it just sounds like a toddler moaning for a toy. He cant pronounce words properly so this adds to the list of things why the town people hate the creature because he cant speak and defend himself against people. He cant explain why he looks like that and who done it to him.

Frankenstien starts being selfish and cruel, he compared the creature to Dante a terrible poem writer. “It became a thing such as even Dante could not have concieved” Horror of that countenance” he uses emotive language and he says that no human being would be able to standlife. When the creature comes to life the candle starts to burn out “My candle was nearly burnt out” this shows how Frankenstien was feeling, he was feeling tierd and exsusted.Frankenstien described the creature as ugly. “Dull yellow eye of the creature opened” this shows that the creature didnt turn out the way he wanted it to because Frankenstien picked out the perfect features and he got an ugly creation “and i selected his features as beautiful! Beautiful” this shows that he picked out everythink to proportion and he said it turned out to be a “catastrope”.

Shelly juxtaposes images of beauty and horror. “watery eyes, that seemed almost of the same colour as the dun white sockets in which they were set his shrivelled complexion and straight black lips”. these are the ugly points made about the creature. They are all images of ugliness and horror. “Lustrous black, flowing hair; his teeth of pearly whiteness”.

These are the face of the creature. He uses the phrase “mingled with this horror” to describe Frankenstien. This is a very emotive quote.Mary shelly uses a pathetic fallacy technique, this is were she uses the weather to reflect on how Frankenstien is feeling. Victor says “Black and comfortless sky” This shows that victor is feeling sorry for himself and he is in a bad miserable mood.Frankenstien is always looking over his shoulder because he is scared that the creature will just turn up. “Irregular steps, not daring to look about me”.Victor dictates a rhyme from the ancient mariner.

The rhyme is very emotive. It has emotive words in it like “fear” and “dread”. The poem also has alliteration in it “frightful fiend”.”I grasped his hand, and in a moment forgot my horroa and misfortune”.

This shows that Frankenstien is feeling sorry for himself and he is using clerval as and excuse to forget about the creature. He is being selfish because he is only using clerval he wouldnt of spoke to him if he never had the creature problem.”I hope, i sincererly hope, that all these employmentsare now at an end, and that i am at length frre”. Frankenstien just wants to be free of the crteature. He doesnt want to take any responsibility for it.”I had left my apartment”.

This shows that Frankenstien is a coward he wont go back to his apartment because he is too scared that the creature will still be there. He thinks the creature wants to kill him because he abandoned it.Victor called the creature “The enemy” The creature has done nothink wrong. He has done nothing to hurt Frankenstien. The main reason i think he calls him the enemy is because he is scared of the creature.

“Hideous guest” Frankenstien calls the creature his guest even though he doesnt know him. When Victor enters the apartment the creature has gone but he is still scared because he doesnt know where the creature has gone it could be anywhere now so this once again builds up fear. He is glad to be rid of it but it could be causing trouble and bring the blame back to Victor.”During all that time Henry was my only nurse” Frankenstien is a selfish person he uses clerval to get sympathy from and to get looked after. Clerval (Frankenstiens Best Mate) is a selfless person. Clerval looks after Frankenstien while he is feeling sorry for himself.

This chapter is narrated by the creature. We see how the creature fends for himself and how he adapts to life without any help. This is in the first person narrative. This chapter is from the creatures point of view. We will look at the creatures side of the story. The creature speaks with intellegence “considerable difficulty” he uses elaborate vocabularly.

The creature is very vunerable. He has to fend for himself because he has no other parents to guide him and show him the right way to live. This makes us feel sorry for the creature. At first he found it hard fending for himself, trying to adapt to life. He couldnt use the body straight from the off. “A strange multiplicity of sensations seized me, and i saw, felt, heard and smelt at the same time;and it was indeed, a long time before i learned to distinguish between the operations os=f my various sense.” He is seeing, smelling, feeling and hearing things all at the same time.

You can compare him to a new born baby trying to use all its senses. He is confused.”Hunger” and “Thirst” are to of many emotions humans feel.

When the creature gets hungry and thirsty this shows that he is human like. The creature has human needs and needs to fulfill them. The creature has instints to eat. “I ate some berries” This shows that he eats without any guideance how to. Thought the creature is bigger than any normal human he only eats a few berries and that satisifies him. He has nothing but he is still happy. The quote “Half Frightened” makes us feel sympathy for the creature because he has no one to comfort him and to help him get through the night.

The creature is scared of the dark this shows us he has emotions of a child as most children are scared of the dark.”I sat down and wept” The creature is very sensitive he is not at all a monster. The creatures just needs pointing in the right direction. The creature is a very sensitive character in the way he phrases words “gentle light” It shows that he is a good person, he may just want revenge now.”Radient form” He doesnt know the name of his needs. “No distinct ideas occupied my mind”. He doesnt know what to think.

He doesnt think about much because he is confused. The creature seems very poetic he uses phrases like “Orb of night”. He seems very sensitive and he is very kind to nature.

The creature also quotes “I was delighted when i first discovered that pleasent sound”. and “little winged animal”. He loves the sounds of the birds. When the birds started singng it brought a lump to the creatures throat.

This shows that he is sensitive and caring.” Sometimes i wished to express my own sensations in my own mode, but the uncouth and inarticulate which broke from me, frightened me into silence agian”. The creature is frightened of his own voice. The creature wants to sing and set his emotions free, he wants to express himself but as soon as he opens his mouth to sing his voice puts him back to silence again because he hasnt been taught how to speak.

“In my joy i thrust my hand into the live embers, but quickly drew it out again with a cry of pain”. This once again makes us feel sympathy for the creature because he hasnt been taught not to put his hand in fires. He doesnt know what fire is and what the effect of fire is.

“How strange i thought, that ihe same cause should produce such opposite effect!” this is a scentific sentence. The creature speaks with intellegence. The creature uses scientific language to talk to Frankenstien. All the way through his life hes been teaching himself to do things like e.g. build a fan “a fan of branches” He’s had no guidence and has brought himself up.

“And knew not how to reproduce it”. The fire burnt out and the creature doesnt know how to get it started again.Shelly presents the creature as a tabula casa (blank sheet). She seems to be saying that no one is bad from the start and its your own experiences that turn you into a bad person. “To know all is to forgive all”.

People you bump into in life may be dodgey or something but there must be a reason why there like that so you must look back and see there experiences and see why there like that so this is like the creature he is bad because he had to fend for himslf in life.”I escaped to the open country”. The creature is running away in fear of the human beings after they had just beat him up. Th creature got violently attacked. The creature is a victim of human beings and that is the opposite of what we would expect. We would expect the creature to be stomping around trying to kill humans not run away from them.I circled two words from the passage.

“Grievously” and “fearfully” this shows how scared the creature really is.”Lay down happy to have found a shelter, however miserable, from the inclemecy of the season”. this shows that despite the fact all hes hes got to live in is a small cold shelter that get referred to later on as a kennel the creature is still happy. The creature doesnt feel sorry for himself at all.

He thinks hes living the life of royalty living in this shelter. “pig- sty and a clear pool of water” these are terrible conditions no humn should have to live in them. “I ate my breakfast with pleasure” The creature thinks hes in paradise, He thinks hes staying in a five star hotel.”In one of these was a small and almost imperceptible chink I through which the eye could just penatrate”. The creature was looking through a small hole that you could hardly see through. This shows that he is an outsider. But the creature sits there watching the family through the crack this this shows that he comes to love them.

“He played a sweet mornful air.” He is viewing the family with wonder he loves them. He thinks they are the most beautiful thing he’s ever seen. The monster realises from looking at the family that humans are capable of making beauty. In conclusion to the story Mary Shelly creates sympathy for the creature in the way she uses emotive language towards the creature. I think Mary does create sympathy for the creature by using Frankenstien as a kind of bully. Mary uses a chinese box technique to tell the story.

I think that this is a good technique because it gives both characters a chance to tell there own version of events. The creature ges to tell the readers his story and from this he gained much sympathy from the viewers. The creatures story has a big impact on the readers. The emotive language and the poetic talk makes us feel sympathy for the creature because he is a sensitive character he just needed to be shown the right way to go. The creature got no consoltation and no guidance thats why we feel like the creature is the best character because he had to fend for himself and ended up doing good for himself.

So Mary Shelly wanted Sympathy and she got sympathy for the creature.
