Love is not necessarily between a man and a woman.
A friendship between two people can also consist of love or at least there may be a reason why these friends bond together. It is also a possibility that you fall in love with the materialistic objects that he/she owns and not the person him or herself. We meet “superficial love” as a main theme in this short story.
As sub-themes, we meet “friendship” and “control.” “The Fabulous Button Sisters” is a short story written by Sarah Salway in 2006. The story is about the main character Karen. A new girl starts in her class by the name Michelle. At that point, Karen has a best friend named Connie. When Michelle starts school, Connie was not attending school because of her illness. Karen falls in love with the way Michelle makes everything her own and with her glamorous looks. She basically ditches her best friend Connie and becomes Michelle’s new minion.
Michelle lives alone with her aunt because her mother is trying off a career in Hollywood, which is what we get the impression of at the beginning. Michelle makes Karen her own, as well as she makes any other thing her own. She takes decisions for Karen and one day she decides that they should dress up as chocolate buttons. At the very end, Michelle breaks Karen’s heart and she realizes the real Michelle. If we look at the relationship between Michelle and Karen, we see that Karen tries her best to be just like Michelle. However, for what cause? Michelle rules everything and she decides that they will dress up as buttons: “I’ll be white and you can be ordinary.”(p.
1 – l. 29). By this quotation, we face that Michelle makes the decisions even before asking Karen about what she wants to wear.
She convinces her that she should be the ordinary brown one.Karen might not be convinced but she knows for sure that she will lose if she argues with Michelle. Furthermore, she forces Karen to go on special diet, such as: ?..
