Ralph and Jack continuously throughout the book fight and argue over rules and regulations. Ralph was very calm and was very set on making some sort of signal to attract the attention of passing ships so they could get rescued like when he said ‘We can help them to find us. If a ship comes near the island they may not notice us. So we must make smoke on top of the mountain. He is also not very forceful at making people do things his way. Ralph believes that there should be a rota for keeping the fire going. Ralph also thinks that every one should follow and obey the rules.
Ralph feels that as long as he has the conch than the rules are very important and so is the conch.Jack on he other hand liked to split the group up in hunters and workers. Like when Ralph said ‘Jack can be in charge of the choir. They can be what he wants them to be?’ and Jack replies ‘Hunters’. Jack felt that in a society such as this there should be punished with violence such as given beatings when the rules were broken. We see an example of this in the chapter ‘The Shell and the Glasses’ when we hear Robert talking to Roger and Robert says ‘He’s going to beat Wilfred’.
Jack feels that the hunters should be armed with sticks to kill the pigs. Jack was more interested in creating group where people could hunt and eat and have feasts than finding a way of getting home. Jack felt that the conch didn’t matter at his side of the island because he knew Ralph had extra power with the conch. There were a few similarities between Ralph and Jack.
Both felt that the littluns were unimportant but Ralph was protective towards them. Also both feel that the fire is very important both want fire for very different reasons. Ralph wants a fire for a signal while Jack wants a fire to cook meat. The break up of society happens during the chapter titled ‘The beast from water’.
Jack and Ralph become involved in another argument about the beast and Ralph shouts at Jack for breaking the rules and Jack replies ‘Bollocks to the rules! We’re strong- we hunt!’Before this there were times where Ralph and Jack had argued and fought but this time Jack left the group.Ralph’s leadership styles were based around the conch and the rules while Jack focused more on hunting and fun. Ralph is protective towards the littluns while Jack feels they are sissies and cry babies. Jack feels that because they can’t hunt they are worthless. This shows us that Ralph is more responsible. Jack uses fear to lead people.
Jack knew all along that there was no beast but he allowed people to believe in it so they would join his group and go hunting with him and search for food but the others thought they were after the beast.Ralph uses the conch for power. When he first found it he used it to call everyone together. This was the main advantage Ralph had over Jack because Jack knew that whenever Ralph had the conch Ralph would still have that power so Jack tried to play down the importance of the conch.
I believe that it was inevitable that Jack was going to take over because everyone on the island was unstable because of the beast and hunting and fighting seemed fun compared to sitting around the fire waiting to be seen by a passing boat. Also people were very hungry and Jack was offering feasts, which is more appetising than fruit and berry’s.The reason Jack wasn’t chief at first was because Ralph wanted to build a society where people could be found and taken home and Ralph was able to organise rules and was willing to listen to the others unlike Jack who just wanted to take charge and hunt.I conclude that it was inevitable that Jack would take charge eventually .I also feel that Jack was a stronger leader but unfortunately he was leading people to the wrong things.
