I would like to start with a saying by William S. Burroughs ‘The aim of education is the knowledge, not of facts, but of values’.
Having done an inspiring four-year course in Petroleum & Mining Engineering, I would like to use this knowledge to do my Masters in Science. As my undergraduate degree was theoretical in nature, I want to indulge myself into research. Studying masters at your esteemed university would give me the leading edge in technology and the practical low-down and information I require to succeed. For the past few decades man is advancing into the unknown realms of technology and science. This advancement is to make life easy and to increase human comfort at home and at work and I would like to be an integral part of such betterment. For this, research would be of prime importance with hands on experience in real time applications accompanied by in-depth knowledge of the subject. Technology, today, means power in the widest sense of the term and not merely the power of mind. And it is this power potential that has given it the status it now enjoys.
Why Higher Education?
Why this program?
Right from my High school days I had a strong inclination to be a Chemical Engineer. My Interest grew further when I went to obtain training in Training Institute of Chemical Industries on “Process Unit Operation & Process Control Technique” for 4 weeks, where I accumulated a great deal of laboratory experience. The experience and the knowledge I gathered there was instrumental. After that, I started watching videos and reading articles related to the chemical industry. My country has made great strides in terms of its technical prowess over the past several decades, yet there is still considerable room for advancement in its chemical engineering field. In order to contribute to the advancement and modernization of this field, I hope to study in your graduate program of Chemical Engineering, obtaining a new conceptual understanding and professional knowledge in this field. Chemical engineering encompasses a variety of fields, including from biological chemistry, sustainable and clean energy, and materials to environment management. I am eagerly waiting to learn advanced knowledge and experience the world class laboratory facilities in all of these areas.
1. Environmental protection
2. Sustainable energy development
3. Energy storage/conversion
Another driving factor for my desire to do the subject is the design element. I particularly like how the component steps of a chemical process – from delivering the reactant mixtures to heat exchange to waste disposal – all assemble together. The need to meet design requirements in an economical manner poses yet another challenge, along with the increasing importance of sustainable production. Integrating and resolving all these various elements into one single, functional process is what makes process engineering appeal to me so much. For these reasons, I am greatly looking forward to the final-year design project.
My previous university studies of petroleum engineering have prepared me for the challenge of joining your school. As an undergraduate, I frequently took practical courses such as Computer Programming, where I learned to solve problems by writing programs. I also enjoyed several experimental classes, such as Unit Operations and Process Control Lab, where I accumulated a great deal of laboratory experience. From working on projects and presenting the results, I developed good research skills and a better understanding of theory, as well as improving my confidence in public speaking.
I got admitted to Shahjalal University Science and Technology, one of the reputed institutions in the country through an entrance exam & by merit. I took Petroleum & Mining Engineering as my major for it offered me innumerable choices of specialization. During these 4 years, I learnt Subjects including Mathematics, Calculus, Numerical Analysis, C Programming, Fluid Dynamics, Physical Chemistry, Heat Transfer, Thermodynamics etc. This undergraduate program has given me a strong foundation and has brought about considerable maturity in my outlook.
Reflecting on my undergraduate days, I would like to emphasize on my academic record. I believe that knowledge is not what one is able to retain and reproduce on a sheet of paper. It is grasping of the complexities of the subject and founding a strong technical base that matters. At the start of my undergraduate studies I did focus as I wanted, I did not score well in my exams, I was lagging behind. After completing my second year second semester I started persevering more. A allocated much of my time to studies. I was so low in confidence that I never thought that I would be able to compete at the top. But my perseverance paid of in my final year when I was amongst the top 3 students and eventually I finished at 8th position in my department. Not only the results of my exams, my final year project was applauded by the department head and my supervisor. He also regarded me highly after seeing my performance.
Needles s to mention that the Canada is leading in this field and your academic institutions are held in high esteem worldwide. What attract me though, are the freedom of academics and the variety of courses offered by your prestigious institute.
My first brush with serious research was in final year of my undergraduate course when I successfully completed the project titled “Key Reservoir Parameters Estimation Using Perforation Inflow Test Analysis of Sylhet Gas Fields Limited (Well Number Sylhet 7)”. The objective of this test was to estimate initial pressure, permeability and skin of a reservoir. The software called FEKETE F.A.S.T WellTestTM was used in this analysis. The project was applauded and highly appreciated by the faculty members and the students of my department. The encouragement helped me a lot in gaining more confidence.
Co-curricular and Extracurricular activities
I worked as an office secretary at the student chapter of Society of Petroleum Engineers for 2 years. In this period, we organized many successful seminars and workshops in our department. This experience created a whole new dimension to my personality, teaching me how to work in a group, how to lead a team.
I would like to pursue my further studies in Canada to expand my ken. In a decade from now I envisage myself as a Research Scientist in premier research Laboratory or as a Professor in a top university. I understand that M.Sc. culminating in a Ph.D. is very essential, henceforth my short-term goal is to do M.Sc. in a good University. I have chosen your institution in order to pursue my graduate studies because of the distinguished faculty and excellent infrastructural facilities in your University make its graduate program ideally suited to my academic goals.

• Why did you choose to study in this particular country?
• What are your expectations from both the graduate program, and the university?
• What are you like, as a person?
• Apart from work and education, what are your hobbies, interests, and habits?
Apart from education, I am a very sports loving person. From childhood, I was associated with cricket, football, volleyball etc. My inclination towards outdoor sports enabled me with great opportunities. I played in school cricket team for 3 years. I had the chance of playing school cricket at national level, when we won the divisional cricket tournament. After that I started playing 1st division cricket league. When I was studying in college, I was a part of a great football team which won the inter-college tournament. Throughout my undergraduate studies I was involved in sports. I participated in several cricket and football tournaments and became champion in few of them. The most memorable one was, when we won the inter-department football league. I also had the opportunity to lead a young cricket team in my school. Although I am a fan of outdoor games, I love indoor games as well. Whenever I have free time a play pool, snooker etc. I love reading books, watching documentaries. I love to read a lot of books and journals. Besides giving me a fair idea of the subject, this also gives me an opportunity to keep abreast of the latest developments and technology. My favorites are the SPE publications and journals, RICE publications and journals, The Economist etc.
