Imagine being a highschool student that is not a minority group, about to finish the last year and looking for a college to enroll to.
Having an overall GPA of 3.0 and good grades. However don’t get in because a person with less qualifications gets enlisted. The right of the citizens to political and social freedom and equality.
We should not allow employers or colleges to give preference to someone based on being apart of a minority group. Affirmative action is an fallout issue of the Civil Rights Movement in 1960s, it was to impact commensurate opportunities for members of minority groups and education and employment. Although how is it equal if someone is not being judged by their accomplishments. Affirmative action is racial discrimination towards people that aren’t in minority groups, even if it is diversity, it is not fair for someone to work so hard to get in a college, but don’t get in because of Affirmative Action. Although a slacking student gets in the same college just for being in a minority group. In 2013, 3.4 percent of entering students were African American Ten Percenters, while an additional 1.2 percent were African Americans admitted for diversity purposes (Strauss).
If it was fair they would base students by their academic strengths instead of skin color. Then everyone would have equal opportunities just like the Civil Rights made in the 1964. Despite that, just as Title VII of the Civil Rights Act made it illegal to discriminate based on race or gender, it also made it illegal to base any hiring decision, in whole or in part, on someone’s race or gender (Talley).Since 1960s several cases have been brought up to the Supreme Court. Just like Edward Blum’s case against Harvard University (11 Facts). Schools and universities provided many of America’s desegregation battlegrounds. In the 1978 regents of the university of California vs Bakke case & 2003 the Grutter vs Bollinger case, race is allowed to be considered as one of many factors today (7 Criticisms).
Edward Blum, who runs the Project on Fair Representation, sued Harvard University on behalf of Asian students who were rejected by Harvard. It was a clear case of favoring certain racial group over others. “Quotas and racial balancing are strictly against the law.” Said Blum, who sued the University on behalf of white applicant over its Affirmative Action.
This case went to the Supreme Court last year. The students were named anonymous but their qualifications were higher than the other group on the SAT and yet rejected. Affirmative Action also reinforces stereotypes and racism because of reverse discrimination. In 2011, Asian men and women earned more than white, blacks and hispanics in the United States (11 Facts).
Affirmative action policies are often focused on employment and and education. Controversy surrounding the constitutionality of affirmative action programs. President John F. Kennedy issued executive order, which creates Committee On Equal Employment Opportunities. Kennedy made this executive order to ensure that hiring and employment practices are free of racial bias. This policy still remains supported by the federal government and is legal everywhere in the country but Texas and California (20 Principals).
Justice Roberts says, “The way to stop is criminal ion on the basis of race is to stop discriminating on the basis of race,”(Unequal). Affirmative Action is a big issue in our society and is still being debated on today. Affirmative Action is reverse discrimination. The past discrimination against certain minority groups does not justify present discrimination against non-minorities. All people are equal under the laws of the United States of America and should be treated accordingly.Affirmative Action causes deserving students to not be accepted into a college that they applied for and were qualified for entrance to this particular school. Sure, if someone doesn’t get into their first college, then they still have a chance at getting into another. While research varies, Affirmative Action in college admission offices is the equivalent of adding 150 to 310 points on an SAT score for a minority (11 Facts).
Should that rejection be based on their achievements or skin color? The kid who goes to a college preparatory high school, earns good grades and who is involved should be admitted into college, but with affirmative action, the less knowledgeable kids get accepted in their place even though they aren’t educationally ready. Most people often believed that Affirmative Action gives minority groups more of an unearned advantage over others. Affirmative Action is reverse discrimination to people who aren’t in minority groups. Colleges should not continue using Affirmative Action. It allows somebody who is less educated to go because of their race, and not their accomplishments. In the future we want to see their accomplishments. Now there is no need for it because Affirmative Action is making discrimination worse.
