It is one of the majorproperties of the mud that helps in maintaining hydrostatic pressure. Ifpressure is to be controlled, density is the first property to be adjustedbecause the pressure exerted by a mud column on a formation depends on it. Whendrilling through soft formations, the density should be moderate so as not todamage the formation while drilling and should be increased when drillingthrough high pressured formations.
