Ibelieve that if we spoke a different language, we would perceive the worlddifferently. Knowing another language helps us learn and understand the cultureof that particular language. This is why I want to become a translator orinterpreter as I am very intrigued by how different culture can be.
I amexcited to discover the hidden perception of communication and culture, whichcan allow me to educate others through translation. I am bilingual speaker ofboth English and Italian meaning that I have encountered life though bothcultures. I believe that speaking another language allows you to think and seethings in several ways that others may not familiar with.
This reflects exactlywhy I feel so passionate about many languages around the world. My fascinationtowards English, Italian and Spanish, in particular, is closely related to this. From a young age I was translating and interpreting for my mother, who cannotspeak god English.
With this I have found that I enjoy interpreting for othersas it bring my great satisfaction knowing that I can help others through verbaland written communication. My motivation for wanting to study translation isconnected to the attractiveness of the languages and cultures that come withit. I am very eager to unravel the history of English, Italian and Spanish languageas they have intrigued me like no other language has. Their literature has alsoinspired me to learn the languages as well as motivating me for the future forexample ‘Como Agua Para Chocolate’ by Laura Esquivel and ‘Io Non Ho Paura’ byNiccolo Ammaniti. I believe reading a book in its original language is morebeneficial as a reader because you can discover different vocabulary structuresand cultural themes that you did not know before. I have always been interestedin exploring different meanings of the same word as all three of these languagesare so rich in their vocabulary. As a result I enjoy being able to express a similarfeeling or thought in many other ways.
Personal I find interpreting a challenge. It amazes me how one can simultaneously can interpret from language to the other;in the future I would like to gain the skills I need to become an interpretermyself. I have studied Spanish for nearly seven years at an academic levelwhich has urged me to take my learning further and study it at A Level. Inaddition to improve my writing skills I decided to take Italian as an A Levelbecause I only had conversational skills meaning that I did not know how towrite an essay confidently without guidance.
During the language courses, notonly have I become more confident in translating from English to Italian and Spanishto English, it has also allowed me to improve my linguistic ability andamplified my interest with translation. In my last year at school I volunteeredto teach a student Italian, to allow me to develop my teaching skills whichcould benefit me in the near future. During the lessons, I have found that notonly does it bring me satisfaction to teach the language, also I feel like I’mlearning new things with my student which allows me to amplify my knowledge. Beforeuniversity I am looking to go to Spain for the summer to improve my fluency inthe language through work experience and living in the community.Studying translationand interpretation at university will not only allow me to immerse myself intodifferent cultures, but it will also help me practice translating andinterpreting as a job.I sustain that one can do many things with speaking a newlanguage; also many opportunities can arise in the future. Being brought up inboth cultures has been beneficial in my life in many aspects, as it has helpedme learn a new language such as Spanish.
In addition I believe that knowing alanguage such as Spanish will open many doors, as its one of the most spokenlanguage in the world. The world is growing bigger and bigger and the demandfor translators and interpreters rises every day. I wish to help people tobetter their communication and to be given this opportunity and be part of thetranslating community.
