How significant is the role of the supernatural in the books Chronicle of a Death Foretold and Thousand Cranes? The supernatural is very significant in the books Chronicle of a Death Foretold and The Things They Carried and can be seen through many ways as each story is presented. This is important because it helps us understand what supernaturalism is in general, so that we can fully understand the roles of it in the two novels Chronicle of a Death Foretold and The Things They Carried. In Tim O’Brien’s The Things They Carried, supernaturalism can be seen by the characters telling their stories of how they dealt with the war and what they did after the war was over. Supernaturalism is defined as “relating to an other of existence beyond, the visible observable universe. ” This basically states that there is life beyond what we can see or believe.
The sixth sense can be described as “a perception which allows people to predict events or pick up on subtle cues which other miss. ” “People also sometimes describe extra-sensory perception (ESP) as a sixth sense, stressing the idea that the sixth sense is paranormal in nature. This is mostly what is believed as true because there are three main groups when it comes to deciphering what supernaturalism consists of. Nature is one of them, but it is found at the bottom of the chain, followed by man on top, and then God as the supreme being. When speaking in religious terms, God is found to be a supernatural force because it cannot be seen by the human eye. The fact that there are many “God preformed miracles”, as well give God an other place in the supernaturalism world. One aspect of the supernatural that is the most common even nowadays is obtaining or inheriting the sixth sense.
The sixth sense is basically being able to see objects that are out of limit from the human eye such as ghosts and spirits. Fortune telling or being able to foreshadow the future from a crystal ball, hand signs, or dreams play a big role in supernaturalism. Being able to make any form of communication with spirits such as fortune tellers do or being a ghost hunter/helping ghosts find their place to rest in peace, are very important, as well. Whether you choose to believe in the supernatural or not is what really determines what is and is not true.
People that do not choose to believe in supernaturalism base all f their ideas and facts off of science. They say that what cannot be measured with science, data, and can’t be backed up with facts does not exist. People that are for supernaturalism say that science cannot determine what is really “supernatural” because any aspect from the supernatural world can’t be seen by the human eye, so how can you test it with models and data if it is beyond the universe? There is no true belief that people can communicate with the world beyond us, but yet there is also no belief people do not have experience with hauntings and can see ghosts. In Gabriel Marquez’s novel Chronicle of a Death Foretold the main character experiences many in-cotunterances with the supernatural world; mostly present in the 6th sense from which he inherits from his mother. In the dreams that Santiago Nasar experiences the night before he is killed, he is able to see many visions of signs that predict his death.
His mother, Placida Linero, who is a dream interpreter saw these signs, but did not make a huge deal out of them; she felt that they were just normal features. Santiago would experience the same dream, but yet it would be very peaceful and not haunting or scary. He would always dreams of trees”, sunshine, bird, and other sunny things. ” Usually you would expect hauntings to happen in dreams for anything supernatural to be occurring unless you look at it from a different perspective. Most peaceful dreams have a deep meaning to them such as Santiago’s did because that was not the first time he had had that dream.
Each object in his dream, the trees, bird, sunshine, all had their own meaning and gave away clues that, if interpreted correctly, could have prevented his death.Another aspect of the supernatural that has to do with Santiago Nasar is that fact that Gabriel Marquez mentions the omen in the beginning of the book. “Nor did Santiago Nasar recognize the omen”; and omen is a series of sign that tend to warn of an up coming event. This basically states that Santiago did not recognize the signs that were presented throughout his dream. The sighting of spirits is also another aspect of supernaturalism that is shown in part of the novel Chronicle of a Death Foretold. Santiago Nasar is not the only character in the book that is introduced to the supernatural world.
Family and friends also do as well, but it is only people that have some acquaintance with Santiago such as Margot, who is the narrator’s sister. She claims to have seen “an angle pass by” while she is listing to Santiago talk about his wedding details. This foreshadows his death because the presence of an angle usually comes with the occurrence of a death; either an angle comes or the devil depending on the cleanness of you conscience or soul. So you can tell that there is some sort of supernatural vibe present around Santiago since he does have the sixth sense in him.In Tim O’Brien’s The Things The Carried all the characters are Vietnam War veterans coming back to their normal lives, but yet still reflecting upon their experiences as war soldiers. However, many of them suffer from post war trauma and do not know how to get help for what they are going through.
Each of them deal with their situation in different ways such as: getting medical help for post-war syndrome, writing a book of all that happened, or even tending to just holding it in to the point where suicide is an option. This shows how the supernatural can affect a persons mind when dealing with tough situations such as all the conflicts that come with becoming a solider and actually going out onto the battle field during warfare. One of the characters of the book just keeps “driving around town” because that is how he dealt with what he was going through. As everyday passes on for this ex-soldier “he beings to see hallucinations of what he experience during the war” and eventually ends up committing suicide by “hanging himself. ” This illustrates the supernatural aspect because the ex-soldier has hallucinations, which are a sign of supernatural powers.Another Vietnam War veteran lost his partner during warfare due to his careless mistake of “shinning a flashlight on his girlfriends picture” to show his friend what she looked like.
Immediately the Japanese fired shots at their location, so they had to hide in the muddy lakes, but unfortunately “his friend could not make it because the mud was pulling him down and his he was to late to save him. ” When the war is over he seeks medical help because every time he flashes back on the war that thought comes into his mind and he feels haunted by the moment, since he believes that it was his fault that his partner had died. The haunting gets to him while he is sleeping or even just daydreaming. Supernaturalism plays a big role in this because believing that somebody’s death was your fault will haunt you all your life whether it is in your dreams, day dreams, or even just the thought of it. “He had to seek therapy for a while until he could finally coupe with the fact that the death was not his fault, which helped lessen the haunting thoughts and nightmares throughout the night.
The supernatural is very significant in the books Chronicle of a Death Foretold and The Things They Carried and can be seen through many ways as each story is presented. This is illustrated throughout both novels Chronicle of a Death Foretold and The Things They Carried. Supernaturalism helps us understand the stories that lie behind every individuals life and what it is that caused the presence of it or what it is predicting. Santiago Nasar uses it to predict the outcome of his death while the characters of The Things They Carried use it to help them get over their post-war trauma syndromes or how to deal with deaths of close friends.
