Challenges of a Moral Standard in Uncle Tom’s Cabin

“Uncle Tom’s Cabin” is a book about the lives of slaves during the mid-1800’s. Author Harriet Beecher Stowe was born June 14th, 1811 in Litchfield, CT (Stowe’s Life).

She was born the sixth child in a family of 11, all devout Christians. Christianity was such an important factor in her family’s upbringing in fact, that all 7 of her brothers ended up becoming ministers (Stowe’s Life). Due in part to Harriet Stowe’s Christian morals, she was known as an avid abolitionist. After the fugitive slave laws were put in place, Harriet Stowe began writing a book to convey all of her pent up anger and ideas regarding the practice of slavery in our country. This book was such a controversial and powerful piece of literature, that it is commonly thought to have been a crucial factor in the start of the civil war. This rumor that Uncle Tom’s Cabin was a key factor in the start of the war was so widespread that when Harriet Stowe met Abraham Lincoln he said “So this is the little lady who made this big war” (History.

com). However, While Harriet Stowe’s book “Uncle Tom’s Cabin” is wildly considered one of the most progressive and anti-slavery books of all time, Stowe’s main purpose of this book was in fact not to try and end slavery, but to spread the belief system of Christianity. Harriet Stowe believed that if she could somehow get the nation to adopt the Christian values that not only would slavery be abolished, but the entire nation would become a peaceful and better place. “Give my love to mas’r, and dear good missis, and everybody in the place! Ye don’t know! ‘Pears like I loves ‘em all! I love every creature, everywhar!-it’s nothing but love! O Mas’r George! What a thing it is to be a Christian!” (Stowe 365). This is a quote said by Uncle Tom as he is lying on the floor of the shed taking in his last moments of life. This is one of the most powerful moments of the book as it brings on a wave of emo.
